Tips before your session

Attending therapy using telehealth is new to many people. It is normal to feel unsure about what to expect. Below are some helpful tips to ensure your telehealth experience goes smoothly.

Privacy

In order to ensure your telehealth session remains confidential, follow these helpful tips to protect your privacy at home:
  • Set up in a quiet, private space where you will not be interrupted or overheard
  • Let other household members know that you will be in a meeting so they can respect your privacy during the counselling session
  • Use headphones with your device to increase privacy
  • Turn on a fan, white noise machine or playlist in the background
  • If you are interrupted, let your therapist know so you can pause the session until you have privacy again

Before the session

  • Complete regularly scheduled updates on your device
  • Turn on your device and login a few minutes before your session is scheduled to begin
  • Ensure your device has an adequate charge or is connected to a power source
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet (for video sessions only)
  • Ensure you are dressed appropriately (dress as you would to attend an in-person appointment)
  • Put notifications and cell phone on 'silent'
  • Alert household members that you will be in an online meeting so they don't interrupt
  • Get comfortable: blankets, a glass of water and tissues are often helpful to have handy

During the session

  • Your therapist will review some standard telehealth information with you, including your location during the session, emergency contact and verification of your privacy
  • Your therapist will review a 'back up plan' in case there are technical issues
  • You and your therapist will create a unique treatment plan to meet your needs

After the session

Since your session will take place in a location of your choosing and not the therapy office, it is important to be mindful of the transition back into your daily life after the session ends. Therapy is hard work and can be mentally and emotionally difficult at times. Stepping back into your regular routine directly after a session might be overwhelming. Here are some tips to support good self care following a session:
  • Plan for some extra time to yourself following the session to collect your thoughts, do some deep breathing, self reflection, etc.
  • When your session is over and you are ready to resume your daily routine, you may want to create some sort of ritual to signify the transition. Some suggestions are making a cup of tea, blowing out a candle that was lit during the session, or physically leaving the room you were in
  • Practice self compassion following the session and be mindful that your emotions may be more 'raw' than usual
  • Complete homework tasks if any were suggested during the session
  • Book your next appointment if you didn't do so already
