Therapy for Depression

How do I know if I am depressed?

Depression is not something you can see, and many people who experience depression may not show or express their symptoms outwardly, which can be exhausting and isolating for them. Depression can affect children, youth, adults and seniors.

What are common symptoms of depression?

  • Persistent low mood
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue and lack of energy despite getting enough sleep
  • Sleep disturbance (oversleeping, restless sleep, difficulty falling or staying asleep, insomnia)
  • Change in appetite (overeating or lack of appetite)
  • Low motivation
  • Withdrawal from social supports, and isolation
  • Previously enjoyable activities no longer feel enjoyable
  • Self harm
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Feeling emotionally 'numb'

What are the treatment options for depression?

There are several effective treatment options for depression, and many clients adopt a treatment plan that involves a combination of medication and therapeutic intervention. There are a variety of medications that can help reduce the severity of symptoms of depression. Clients would consult with their family doctor to discuss which medication would be best for them. It is important to note that medication doesn't take the symptoms away completely, but many clients report that medication helps bring them back to 'baseline' where they are able to function, and better able to utilize healthy coping strategies and make behavioural changes.

This is where therapy can be very helpful, as a therapist works with each individual client to understand their unique needs and circumstances, and to develop a treatment plan to help them reach their goals. Therapy provides a safe, supportive relationship where clients can be open and honest about their concerns and symptoms, and receive objective support from someone with specialized training in treating mental health concerns.

Therapeutic Interventions for Depression

What if my child/youth is depressed?

Depression is a serious mental illness that can affect children and youth, as well as adults. If you are concerned that your child may be depressed, it is important to seek support quickly. Early intervention can prevent symptoms from worsening, and give children and youth the skills and support they need to be healthy and safe. Several of our Mental Health Therapists work with children and youth. The first session for a child or youth client who is under 18 years of age always starts with a parent/guardian consultation first (the child is not present). This allows parents/guardians to discuss their concerns openly and honestly with the therapist and review the consent and confidentiality agreement before meeting with the child.
